YMCA Community Annex Project
Renovation & Rehabilitation of A Community Annex
The YMCA is seeking final funding to complete the new WVY campus by rehabilitating and repurposing a 14,000 square ft building that was formerly the Fleet Service Shop for the Chelan PUD, into a Community Annex. Detailed below are six components of this project that will hold a solid mixture of community-serving and impact-sustaining spaces which immediately doubles community impact.
I. Preschool and Community Play Space:
To supplement our existing childcare services towards the overwhelming need for regional childcare, part of the Annex will hold half-day preschool classes 3-5 days per week, with financial supports to ensure access by low and moderate-income families. It will also host a gross-motor play yard for indoor community play time and weekend birthday party rentals.
II. Re-Establish A YMCA Teen Center:
This space would be open after school with offerings for targeted growth, leadership, and wellness programs to ages 11-17. Furthermore, internships within the building at our Recreational Equipment Rental program will align with our leadership development initiatives for this age group.
III. Personal Training Center With Accessible Chronic-Disease-Prevention Space:
Chronic disease management programs will be a key component of both our main and Annex facilities. Utilizing our current fitness equipment, we envision a space for trainers to take their clients AND provide an accessible/adaptive group exercise space and additional group programming tailored to seniors, teens, veterans, and those with impairments and chronic illnesses.
Notably, the Annex would deliver two nationally recognized, evidence‑based chronic disease programs: the Rock Steady Parkinson’s Program, and the CDC‑recognized YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, as well as expand our current partnership with the University of Washington for our Cancer Recovery Rehabilitation Program. These and other offerings expand regional access to proven interventions, reduce chronic disease burdens, and strengthen equitable access to adaptive wellness services for low‑ and moderate‑income individuals.
IV. Outdoor Recreation Program Headquarters & Gear Rental Center:
A dedicated section of the Community Annex will be for the headquarters of our Outdoor Education & Recreation programs and Gear Rental Center. With proximity one block away to the Columbia River waterfront and Apple Capital Loop Trail (11 miles of paved trails and nature areas), the YMCA will expand our adventure-based programs in natural settings, hands-on learning opportunities, outdoor education, and leadership development, in addition to offering overnight camp experiences throughout the northwest.
Additionally, we will provide low cost or free recreational equipment rentals like kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, bikes, rollerblades, etc. to Y members, guests, and community partners.
V. Overflow Office Space for Administration, Program Storage, and Property:
Four current offices in the Annex will be renovated to support nine or more offices for administration, accounting, Childcare, Outdoor Recreation, Equipment Rental, Wellness Trainers, and Property employees. Additionally, the Annex accommodates all the Y's storage needs.
VI. Meet Building-Wide Interior/Exterior Minimum Standards: There are necessary building-wide standards to meet interior safety and capacity as well as exterior security and access. Significant elements include accessible bathrooms, doors/windows, security, and infrastructure such as lighting, heating, and paint. As you can see, based on the robust and diverse usage demands planned in the Annex, meeting these minimum standards is essential and abundantly worthwhile.
Lastly, Sustainable NCW is our current partner in the Community Annex where they have created a safe, inclusive environment where all community members can learn bike repair skills and access tools and work space to grow a thriving bike community in the Wenatchee Valley.
